Literature
Databases:
These databases should be accessed through the
UNCG
library webpage and linking to Subject Guides, then Public
Health Education.
1. CINAHL - You can use limits to narrow search
but be careful to run a broad search rather than searching
something specific. "Indexes about 1,200 nursing and
allied health journals; full text available for about 300
titles. Covers all aspects of nursing and nursing education,
allied health, biomedical, consumer health, and patient education.
Also indexes books and book chapters, dissertations, standards
of practice, and reviews of educational software packages."
2. ERIC -"The most complete indexing database
for education and related topics. Indexes more than 750 journals,
as well as research and technical reports, curriculum and
teaching guides, conference papers, dissertations, and books.
How
to find the full text of items listed in the ERIC database.
Covers adult, career, and vocational education information,
technology assessment and evaluation, language and linguistics,
counseling, special education, reading and communication,
educational management, teacher and teacher education, elementary
and early childhood education, urban education, higher education,
and more. Includes web links to the full text of selected
ERIC Documents (ED numbers)."
3. Pubmed - "The leading source for articles
from medical and health-related journals. Search Medline and
OLDMEDLINE citations on the Entrez platform. Subject coverage
includes biology, microbiology, environmental health, nutrition,
public health, anatomy, physiology, genetics, sports medicine,
and hospital administration, plus much more. Citations are
compiled by the National Library of Medicine, the world's
largest medical library. Medline
Journal Browser (covers abbreviations). Other Medline
databases to which the Library has access: Medline
on the Science Direct platform, Medline
Plus (Consumer Health Information)."
4. Sociological Abstracts - "Guide to journal
articles, books, and more in sociology, social psychology,
social work, community development. Provides abstracts of
journal articles from over 2500 journals, conference papers,
dissertations, book reviews, and books. Covers all aspects
of sociology, including community development, culture and
social structure, demography, human biology, environmental
interactions, family and social welfare, health and medicine,
law, religion, science, social psychology, group interactions,
welfare services, and women's studies. Also indexes Social
Planning/Policy and Development Abstracts, which focuses
on solutions to social problems."
5. Social Work Abstracts - "Guide to social
work and related literature (child and family welfare, sociology,
crime and delinquency, and community health). Provides citations
to more than 450 social work, human services, and related
journals. Covers theory and practice, areas of service, social
issues, legislation, community organization, and social problems
such as homelessness, AIDS, child and family welfare, aging,
and substance abuse. Also useful for gerontology, public health,
criminology, psychology, and education."
6. PsychInfo - "Provides citations and
abstracts for psychology and the psychological aspects of
medicine, psychiatry, nursing, communication, sociology, education,
pharmacology, physiology, linguistics, anthropology, business,
and law. Covers journal articles, book chapters, books, and
technical reports, and dissertations. Covers more than 1,300
periodicals, almost all of them peer-reviewed, written in
over 25 languages, as well as worldwide English-language books
published from 1987 to the present."
7. AIDsearch - This site provides citations
to published research, a dictionary, and data on clinical
trials. "AIDSearch is a combination of three databases
(Medline AIDS/HIV, AIDSDrugs, and AIDSTrials) from the National
Library of Medicine that provide information about AIDS and
related topics. Medline AIDS/HIV is a subset of Medline providing
citations from journal articles, government reports, letters,
technical reports, meeting abstracts/papers, monographs, special
publications, theses, books and audiovisuals covering research,
clinical aspects and health policy issues related to AIDS.
AIDSDrugs is a dictionary of chemical and biological agents
currently being evaluated in the AIDS clinical trials covered
in AIDSTrials. AIDSTrials includes information about the clinical
trials of substances being tested for use against AIDS, HIV
infection, and AIDS-related opportunistic diseases."
8. National
Center for Cultural Competence database - This site has
great search options, but it doesn't always have the content
to match. "The National Center for Cultural Competence
(NCCC) maintains a database of a wide range of resources on
cultural and linguistic competence (e.g. demographic information,
policies, practices, articles, books, research initiatives
and findings, curricula, multimedia materials and Web sites,
etc.). The NCCC uses specific review criteria for the inclusion
of these resources. As part of the NCCC's web-based technical
assistance, a selected searchable bibliography of these resources
is made available online. The database is not an exhaustive
listing. It is updated on a regular basis. Each database entry
includes information on the type of resource, category, population(s)
addressed, title, author and description. Descriptions are
written by NCCC faculty and staff. When available, source
and contact information are provided. Most of the resources
are copyrighted; it is the responsibility of each user to
acknowledge and gain permission for use."
9. The
Combined Health Information Database (CHID) - good guide
to health promotion materials if you keep your search broad.
"CHID is a bibliographic database produced by health-related
agencies of the Federal Government. This database provides
titles, abstracts, and availability information for health
information and health education resources. CHID lists a wealth
of health promotion and education materials and program descriptions
that are not indexed elsewhere. New records are added quarterly
and current listings are checked regularly to help ensure
that entries are up to date and still available from their
original sources. Some older records are retained for archival
purposes. CHID is updated four times a year. The updated database
is available at the end of these months: January, April, July,
and October."
10. Graylit
- This database is hard to get a document on a specific topic
under male health. The information is very technically based.
"The GrayLIT Network makes the gray literature of U.S.
Federal Agencies easily accessible over the Internet. It taps
into the search engines of distributed gray literature collections,
enabling the user to find information without first having
to know the sponsoring agency. The GrayLIT Network is the
world's most comprehensive portal to Federal gray literature.
By offering a mode of communication for this hard-to-find
class of literature, the GrayLIT Network enables convenient
access by the American public to government information."
